Expanding HPV prevention

Dear Editor:

Tuesday’s “A Political Wife’s Influence on an Issue” (New York Times, Sept 27, 2011) examined the role of former nurse and Texas first lady Anita Perry on her husband’s surprisingly liberal executive order 4 years ago. As a public health major I was pleased to see that for the Perrys political affiliation does not inhibit their decision to promote health in a topic typically outside of party lines.

Mrs. Perry is passionate about an issue most Republicans would turn a conservative cheek to. Unsubstantiated beliefs that such vaccination efforts will encourage teen sex undermine Perry’s efforts as adults fail to realize the CDC recommends HPV vaccinations at this age for it to work best. This was an act of prevention for the most prevalent STI in the United States. Unfortunately this order was overturned. Current California bill AB 499, with its key shift away from a mandate to access, will hopefully fair better.

Sincerely,
Michelle Little
